East of England Schools' Food Challenge

Each year a team of Year 9 girls enters the East of England Schools’ Food Challenge, run in conjunction with the East of England Show.

This year’s competition theme was ‘a Taste of Old England with a Modern Twist’, using produce of British origin and sourced locally where possible.  The girls opted to produce Patriot Chicken Pie with Piped Potato Pinwheels and a Modern Medley of Mixed Vegetables, followed by Trendy Tipsy Trifle.

Initially they had to battle through the preliminary rounds but eased through these to become one of five teams in the final at the East of England Show.

The teams have 45 minutes to prepare and present their meals in front of judges and an audience in true ‘Ready, Steady, Cook!’ style, with one of the team members also having to give a running commentary.

In addition they have to produce a display showing their background research material.  This year the girls were very interested to learn that some recipes for pies date back to the Middle Ages in England and animated pies were the most popular banquet entertainment during the Tudor period with rabbits, frogs, other animals and even dwarfs being set into the pies, only to emerge and walk down the banquet table when the pies were cut open!

The girls worked really hard throughout the build up and the competition itself and we are delighted to report that they emerged as overall winners.  Well done everyone!
