Senior Curriculum - Modern Foreign Languages

The study of modern foreign languages contributes immensely to the forming of the well rounded, forward looking, modern European citizen. As the European nations move ever closer together, the importance of a knowledge and understanding of other languages and cultures can only increase.

Learning a language is not just about breaking down linguistic barriers.  The experience of learning another language helps to develop openness to other cultures and acceptance of different ways of life.  Language learning is a powerful tool for building tolerant and inclusive multicultural societies.

At Peterborough High School both French and German are studied from Year 7 and all pupils continue with at least one of these languages to GCSE. Both subjects are well represented at A level and results in all external examinations are outstanding, with pupils regularly taking up university courses in languages or in another subject with a language component.

There are flourishing exchange programmes to Lyon and Augsburg which provide a wealth of linguistic and cultural opportunities. We offer a 4-day taster visit to France/Germany for pupils in Year 7 and 8 and a cross-curricular cultural trip for the Sixth Form to a French or German city. Pupils in the Junior School receive timetabled French lessons in Years 4, 5 and 6 with a Senior School French teacher and there is also a Junior School German Club.

We offer vibrant, well-resourced lessons which build up confidence and fluency in speaking, listening, reading and writing, and use both traditional materials and ICT. We also attach great importance to a knowledge and understanding of the culture of the French and German speaking countries.
