Preparatory Curriculum

The Preparatory Department plans a broad but balanced curriculum to meet the needs of each boy and girl. Every practicable opportunity is taken to support children’s learning.  We aim to develop in our pupils lively, questioning minds so that they acquire knowledge, skills and understanding in all elements of study.

The Preparatory Department caters for children aged 3 to 11 years.  Each class is taught by a full-time teacher, with specialist input from Senior School staff. Classroom assistants are employed to help with younger children.

Curriculum 

General

  • High standards and expectations
  • Wide curriculum - always emphasising the importance of doing one’s best both within and outside the classroom
  • National Curriculum guidelines followed
  • All general subjects taught from Reception Class onwards
  • Extra support provided if necessary
  • All pupils from Reception Class upwards learn French
  • Reasoning classes begin in Year 4
  • Latin begins in Year 5
  • Computer Technology used within the classroom environment
  • Over 25 extra-curricular activities and clubs available
  • Close monitoring of progress - Baseline Assessment; Key Stage 1 and 2 SATS; CATS; Annual Spelling and Reading Tests
  • Termly visits to galleries, museums, exhibitions and places of interest
  • Productions and concerts throughout the year

Foundation Stage: Reception

The curriculum is based on the requirements of the Early Learning Goals, as laid down by DES, to provide a foundation for Key Stage 1.  The areas of learning are:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development 
  • Communication, Language and Literacy
  • Mathematical Development 
  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World
  • Physical Development
  • Creative Development

Some of these goals are worked towards within timetabled lessons such as PE, Literacy and Numeracy.  Others may be reached by way of structured play involving a range of activities, from sand and water to painting to dressing up and role play in the home corner.

Observations and Foundation Stage profiles are made of every child, as the year progresses.

Key Stage 1: Years 1 and 2. 

The National Curriculum guidelines are followed in all subjects and may be enhanced by additional topics and activities.

The National Tests are taken in Year 2 and are moderated externally.

Key Stage 2:  Years 3, 4, 5 and 6.

Performing Arts

  • The School maintains a strong musical tradition, where talent is nurtured and stimulated
  • Opportunities to participate in musical activities and performances, both internal and in public, throughout the year
  • Individual instrumental and Speech and Drama lessons available
  • Coaching for LAMDA and Associated Board music examinations
  • Considerable success in Music and Drama Festivals
  • Large School Hall with well-equipped stage

Sport 

  • Numerous games and sporting activities are offered within the timetable:
