Senior Curriculum - History

What’s the most interesting thing in the world?

At Peterborough High School we think that it’s people; real people.

And that’s what History is about.

So, if you like people, you’ll like studying history in our department!

Apart from being interesting, history is very useful because in studying it you will acquire certain key skills. At PHS we try to facilitate this acquisition.

You will learn to:
  • Understand what motivates people;
  • Gather different kinds of information from books, CD Rom and the Internet;
  • Look carefully at this information and check it for bias and propaganda;
  • Read maps, diagrams and graphs;
  • Communicate clearly, verbally and on paper.

Ask yourself:

  • How can you make sense of the present unless you understand the past?
  • How can you understand why the place you live looks the way it does?
  • How can you participate as a citizen if you don’t know how the system works?
  • How can you find help in developing your own set of values?

ANSWER:   STUDY HISTORY!

But at PHS, history isn’t just classroom, or even ICT based. All years enjoy visits to places of interest and relevance to their study units. For example:

Year 7 - Lincoln Castle, Barley Hall, York
Year 8 - Kirby Hall, Lyddington Bede House
Year 9 - The Black Country Museum, Imperial War Museum
