Senior Curriculum - Business Studies

Find out how a business works and how to measure its success

Discover what a manager needs to do to motivate people to work

The Business Studies department offers 6th Form students the opportunity to gain a qualification in a subject, which impacts everyone - business owners, employees, consumers and society as a whole.

The aim of the course is to develop a critical appreciation of business organisations of all types, the markets they serve and the process of adding value. Students learn to analyse real-life business situations and recommend responses, which are cost effective and take into account ethical factors and the impact on all stakeholders. The department provides students with opportunities to visit well-known businesses so that they are able to apply theory to actual situations. Students also take part in the Young Enterprise Company Programme which provides invaluable experience as students run their own buisness.

The AS course is a self-contained qualification which is also the foundation for further study. The first module is essentially an introduction to business, focusing on start-up decisions such as finance and corporate objectives. The second module considers how organisations manage the four functional areas of business - Finance and Accounting, People Management, Operations Management and Marketing.

During the A2 course students specialise in human resource management with the ‘Further People in Organisations’ module and then complete their study with a synoptic module which requires students to take on the role of a business consultant, using all areas of study to recommend future strategy and answer problems identified from a business case.

T
he department is situated in the ICT Suite and has immediate access to 10 computers. The teaching is carried out around a conference table to encourage discussion and the sharing of ideas and experiences related to the work in hand.

A Level Business Studies students from Peterborough High School make valuable employees and successful business entrepreneurs.
